A great picture

This came from the website of the Yemen Observer, one of the English language newspapers in Yemen.

rachelflag2.jpg

Her name is Boushra Almutawakel and she is a photographer in Yemen. Needless to say, a female photographer in Yemen is a rather unusual thing. You can read the article via the link above to read more about her. I want to say a few things about this picture.

There’s no way to know what she meant by it but I find it quite powerful. Many people in the US and Europe see the hijab as a repressive aspect of Arab culture. Of course those people have probably never asked one of those women why they cover up. Part of it is simply dressing appropriately in that culture. A woman here in the US might have a reason to go topless in the US, but she would have to think about it long and hard before she did so. It just isn’t done for the most part.

A more important part of the hijab is its religious importance for those women. By wearing the hijab, they reaffirm what they believe. Here in the US and in Europe, it is also a marker of her faith. Women who wear hijab here know that they are in some senses representing Islam so they better act accordingly. I wish more people that wore a cross would remember that as well.

The hijab is very powerful symbolism when taken in context of faith. Women are quite literally taking refuge under it and by extension Islam. That is why, in my opinion, wearing the American flag as hijab is so powerful. It is not just a religious statement, it is a political.

Of course, it is the kind of politics that I like. She is free to do this, the US constitution guarantees her freedom to not only make this statement but to be a Muslim as well. It is everything that makes this nation great.

She may have been making an “in your face” statement to Americans with it. She might have targeted those people that conflate Christianity and being American or it may have been some sort of statement about the so called War on Terror. I have no idea, but that’s one of the great things about art, the artist does their thing and we are left to makes sense of it. What I love about it is going to piss some others off. How an American acts will probably be different than someone living in the middle east. The many different responses that can come from this is what makes it a great work in my opinion.

You go girl!

My progress

I haven’t written much of the book I’m supposedly working on. I knew that was going to be a problem, and here it is. It’s mostly an issue of finding the right way to present the information, nothing seems quite right… I’m not sure if I should write a narrative or simply present situations. I’m also not so sure about first or third person… Anyway, I’ll figure it out and things will go more smoothly Inshalla…

I am making some progress on the physical front. As you may or may not know, I came back here a physical mess. I could hardly walk 100 yards without weaving all over the place. I still don’t know what lead to my rapid deterioration in that regard, but I think I’m getting better. My muscles were just weak in general. That’s all getting better with some targeted exercises. I bought one of those wheels for doing core exercises. Gawd, that thing is brutal. My shoulders, abs, chest, and back are feeling it right about now.

I’ve also managed to get my digestive things under control as well… I think. I’m now taking some probiotics and they seems to have taken care of the GI issues. It’s nice to be able to eat again and not worry about the results…

So things are improving, slowly… I even have a job! It’s a short term thing, but it should be good. I am scanning about 2500 old negatives, hopefully it’ll go quicker than I think it will… Things are looking up!

You can see some of them by clicking on my “recent pictures” tab under “My Photos” on the right, and you can see the rest of them by clicking on, well the tab that says the rest of them… You can also get there by clicking on the link below that says my pictures… Enjoy!

So long Yemen

000034

Well, I’ll be off tomorrow, I don’t think I’ll have time to get to the internet before I leave and so my next post will be from Doha, Inshalla…

I’m pretty burned out right now, but I can think of some things that I’ll miss. The juice stands, the weather, the beautiful buildings, and the friends I’ve made here. I’m going to put off complaining about the place for right now, it would be too easy. I want to take a little time and try to gain some perspective. Anyway, I’m off to Doha, Ma’slaama Yemen!!!

New pictures

I’ve got some more pictures up on my Flicker account. For some reason, they still are not showing up on my “new pictures” page, so you’ll have to go to “The rest of them” under my pictures to see them. As usual, I’m having some trouble uploading, but I will have them up before too long. I’m starting to get the hang of the pinhole camera. I got a few that I really like. I managed to take a few pictures of a kid, they’re weird, but in a good way I think. Don’t look for technical perfection with them, that’s not what that kind of photography is all about. They are rather evocative, they have a much different “feel” to them than the regular pictures… I think I’m going to give up trying to shoot pictures of people in the sun, it’s just too harsh. If I get them in the shade, everything’s fine…

Pinhole pictures are up!

I have finally been able to upload my pictures taken with my pinhole camera. They’re a little funky looking, but that’s supposed to be part of the appeal… The guy at the lab I got these developed in tried to give me a lecture about shutter speed and fstops after seeing the pitures. I tried explaining to him that this camera doesn’t have a lens or shutter and only one fstop but either he didn’t understand or didn’t believe me.. Anyway, this camera is a lot of fun, I plan on shooting a lot more with it. For some reason, my “recent pictures” tab under “my pictures isn’t working, just click on “the rest of them” and you’ll be taken to the new shots…

Yeah, I’ve still got it….

The scan isn’t very good, but you get the general idea… There are a few pieces of garbage in the neg from the processing, but that’s nothing a little photoshop can’t take care of when it comes time for printing…. And for the record, the materials you use DO matter… If all goes well, there will be a few more shots up on my account, click on “my photos on the right to see them or go directly to my Flicker account…

Picked up the photos…

Things went pretty well. My first two rolls were basically me getting used to the camera. It has a shutter interlock system that gave me some overlapped frames. It turns out I have to cock the shutter and then advance the film. I also kept forgetting to close the frame number window on the back. The result was more than a few pictures with some red streaks on them. Oh, and the framelines are, to quote a popular pirate movie, “They be more like guidelines…” The framing is significantly off. Guess I’ll have to just shoot loose and crop later. I’ll get used to it eventually… The good news is that the exposures were good and the focusing was mostly good. Shooting a medium format camera wide open requires some careful focusing… There was the expected issues with the lab. A very typical thing to have happen is to get grunge on the larger film. 35mm is thinner and so many labs just keep the center of the rollers clean, but when you run 120 film through there and use the entire roller, you get to see all of the upkeep issues at the lab on your negatives. The guy promises me that he’ll have it clean next time. I’ll give him another shot, they were quick, and more importantly, they are nearby. There is another place I can go to, but it’s a bit of a drive to get there. I’ll do it if I have to, but here’s hoping this place can get it’s act together…
