I’ve got a slight cold, that plus the really dry air here is making it uncomfortable for me at night. Last night I basically didn’t sleep, I was up until 8AM. I’d like to blame it on the noise, but I think it was me… The good news is that I’ll probably crash tonight no matter how much noise there is outside…
Well, I’ve finished two of the three books I brought with me from Greece. I’ve already read 1000+ pages in the last 3 days, it doesn’t look like they’ll last me until I go home. I’ll start rooting around, asking if any of the students have any books that they don’t want to take with them when they leave. I’m also surprised how much I’ve been enjoying reading fiction again. I do think that after this next novel, I’ll go back to some more nonfiction but I’ll try to intersperse more fiction along the way…
I haven’t shaved in a couple of weeks and I’ve decided that I’m going to see what I look like with facial hair. I’ve never had it before, I’ve never gotten past the looking really scruffy bit before. I figure it’s something every guy should do once in his life at least. We’ll see how it goes, this may take a while as my whiskers don’t grow very fast…
I bought some shoes last night, a pair of black loafers. They look fine, but most importantly, they fit! I have a pair of low hiking boots that are a size 47, they fit fine width wise, but are too long. I also have a pair of size 46 shoes that are too short and too narrow. These new shoes are a 45, but in extra wide and they seem to fit just fine. They are a little tight, but new shoe tight, not OMG I can’t wear these tight. I was surprised that they had the extra width available. I’ve been told that boots of a similar quality will be hard to come by here since they are so expensive. The first pair of shoes they guy brought out fit OK, but they looked like clown shoes to me. Dress clown shoes to be sure, but still… The toe section was really accentuated, making my foot look incredibly long. I’ve seen that style around and it may work on people with small feet, but not on my enormous ones… I need a decent hiking shoe, or at least one that I don’t mind wearing in the rain and getting dirty. Guess I’ll have to hit some more stores…
I went over to Luchiano’s place last night. We haven’t seen each other in a couple of months. Both of us were gone in the month of July and our schedules had been out of whack for the rest of it. Anyway, he, his girlfriend and I chatted a while at his place and then went out to the Chinese restaurant I like here. Hit a juice bar on the way home (strawberry juice mmmmm) and that’s when he told me… Turns out he’ll be visiting the US in October. Why? Oh yeah, he’s getting married and going to Miami and some other places on his honeymoon!
That took me by surprise. Congratulations Luchiano! Mabrook, mabrook, aleph mabrook! Hmmm, I have to figure out what kind of wedding gift I can get him from here, maybe I’ll see something in Greece…
I’ve been doing a lot of nothing in particular. After I got my tooth out, I caught a ride with Rick down to Mom’s house. He was taking his grandsons (one is 6, the other 4) down there for the weekend. Man, hanging out with kids that age is exhausting… Anyway, my father picked me up and I spent the next several days over there. My uncle came down from the Detroit area, his visit was one of the reasons I timed my trip the way I did. Mark’s a great guy and always a lot of fun to talk to, plus I hardly ever see him. Anyway, it was fun to see him, and staying at Dad’s is always relaxing. Went out kayaking with dad and managed to burn the hell out of my legs. I used sunscreen on my upper body, but I completely forgot about my legs. Yeah, I’m an idiot, but I think that at least part of it was the fact that I had been wearing long pants so long I no longer thought about my legs. This of course led to the double whammy of my legs being paler than usual. They turned quite a bright shade of red, but they never really hurt too much, unless I touched them of course…
I’m back up in the DC area now. Saw Jenny up in Frederick (Gads that’s a long drive) yesterday and had fun talking and catching up in general. Drove home late last night and realized that I hadn’t confirmed with Ramona to meet with her today so predictably she’s out doing something on this wonderful day… Oh well, that means more baseball, I’ll catch up with her soon.
Got my tooth out this morning. It was no big deal, I feel better now than I did before the procedure. Turns out the tooth was cracked down to the root, no wonder it hurt. It also turns out that having it pulled was the best idea. My dentist said that a root canal would have stopped the pain, but that it would have been a temporary thing. So things are going pretty well, I have no pain, and my mouth feels good…
One of my housemates was telling me about how he once bought some pot from an… brace yourself…. albino Rastafarian from Greenland. This happened in Rome… Imagine white dreadlocks and pink pupils in one of the plazas in Rome… He said it felt like he was in the Matrix or something. I haven’t laughed so much in ages. My mind was severely bent trying to imagine that….
I feel like I’m mostly over my cold. All of my obvious symptoms like the running nose, sore throat, etc. have mostly gone away. Despite that, I feel completely drained, not just physically either. I woke up really late this morning with a wicked sinus headache and didn’t want to do anything, not even sleep. I cancelled class and of corse my headache went away 15 minutes later… I keep thinking that the next day I’ll be reenergized, but it’s just another bleah day. Here’s to hoping I feel better tomorrow…
I took some cold medicine before class to help me get through it. I was a little pissed that it didn’t kick in till the end. Now I’m glad it didn’t. I forgot the typical side effect that cold medicine has on me, getting me high as a kite. Seriously, I’m floating and unable to concentrate on much of anything, maybe I’ll just go home and lie down… Thank God my computer automatically checks my spelling, typing this was a chore…
